Bavaria is a fairytale road trip spot. I wish we had a full week there, and I long to go back during the summertime to hike, but we certainly made the most of our short time in winter wonderland.
After Chad and I met up at the Munich airport and engaged in some serious negotiations with the rental car folks, we piled into our BMW X5 (Gustav) and headed south to the Bavarian Alps. For the next two days, we engaged in our palace/castle/dessert tour, punctuated with a trip to a random waterslide park. We stayed at the Hotel Ruebezahl, which is one of of my top 5 favorite hotels. For a pretty reasonable price, our large room (complete with sun room) looked out over 2 castles. Dinner was fantastic, the breakfast spread was pretty remarkable, there was a great sauna/spa area, and it a super cozy, inviting hotel. Then there are the palaces . . . Linderhof, Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau. Wow. And in a gorgeous winter storm . . . double wow. Bavaria should be on every travel list.
Driving on the autobahn in BMW X5 is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up (name the movie).

There was a huge snowstorm the night before our visit to the castle, and it kept snowing all day. Incredibly beautiful, even though it did mean we couldn't hike to the bridge above the castle . . .
